4th of July Party Review by David D. Kim

This year's July 4th brought together the Prime and Route-28 affinity groups in an Independence Day extravaganza. The night's festivities started off with a light dinner of bacon, pork sausages with bacon, chicken and bacon, and bacon wrapped in bacon. It was delightful. Various post-dinner activities were then underway. Some gathered by the pool, others went inside to play Rock Band, and still others participated in card games of a noisy nature. These moments were punctuated with our traditional "throw people in the pool but remember to remove their cell phone and wallet." Many got drenched, but even more survived. As the sun began to set, we made our way outside for a firework spectacular. Our humble show, although complete with sparklers and crackling noisemakers, could not compete with what we saw across the street: illegal rocket fireworks exploding a few feet above our heads, and at times a few feet in front of our faces. We ducked for cover. Showers of ash and illegal rocket debris fell upon us and we slowly retreated back into Pastor David's house to continue our fellowship. But suddenly, at around 9:30 p.m., like Santa Claus coming down the chimney, Pastor David, knowing that we had been good all year, asked us, "Who wants KALBI!!" (Notice no question mark—this was more an assertion than a question, a statement than a proposal). Our celebration was a loud one, but the best moments of the evening were quiet and subtle. It consisted of college students getting to know our single adults, one-on-one conversations, and "how are you?" questions turning into valuable times of fellowship, bonding, and connection. Thank you to everyone who made the evening a success (even our rocket firework buddies across the way).
